A Philippians Prescription

"Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others."
   Philippians 2:3-4

As we consider some of the essentials for healthy relationships, these verses certainly stand out.   Paul reminds believers that just as God looks out for our best interests, so we too should be mindful of the interests of others.

Esteeming others requires seeing them for who God has created them to be.  It also means that we grasp our need for grace and forgiveness. When Jesus died for sinners He did so for all.  So we come in equal standing before God looking out for the interests of those around us.

Since God is at work in us, how we relate to others reflects the work He has done and is doing. His grace and character shines through our actions and attitudes toward others.  Allowing the Holy Spirit to showcase Who Jesus is through our interactions, gives God glory and greatly improves the quality of the lives we live.

"We follow Jesus' footsteps when we use our freedom to choose building others up instead of serving ourselves."
See I Corinthians 10:23-24
